- Exfoliate!!!!! NO OIL BASED EXFOLIATOR: Use sugar or salt to clear away dry, dead skin cells. Always exfoliate 12/24 hours before tanning. Rinse off & then dry thoroughly.
- The SOAP you use before your tan is just as important as after. Avoid bar soaps or in shower moisturizers, these products can neutralize the DHA bronzing reaction within the skin. It is best to use a PH BALANCING, CLEAR LIQUID soap, free of SLS and sulfate. Look for a soap that is as natural as possible and made for sensitive skin. Try Johnson & Johnson Top-To-Toe Liquid Wash.
- WAXING/SHAVING should be done 24 hours prior to your tanning session & never after.
- Certain CHEMICALS can affect the quality of your tan & should be avoided for your session e.g. perfume / deodorant / moisturizer / make-up & oil-based cosmetics.
- Do not MOISTURIZE prior to tanning as this will create a barrier to the tan. If possible, avoid moisturizing at all in the 12 hours prior to your tan.
- Clothes – wear loose, dark clothes with open shoes.
- Avoid WETTING the hands or body for the first 4-6 hours after your tan as this will affect the development.
- Use a large Make up Brush to dust BABY POWDER in fold areas, so you can comfortably spend the day withour deodorant. Yorba have an organic powder.
- Avoid TOUCHING the skin with your hands as the bronzer will transfer to palms and they will tan also. (Toothpaste or baby oil will remove any staining of the palms if this does happen)
- Avoid EXERCISE for 4-6 hours after the session.
- Excessive SWEATING at night may cause rub off onto bed linen.
To allow the DHA (tanning effect) to fully develop:
- Pale/Hard to tan skin: 8-12 hours.
- Medium/Sallow skin: 6-8 hours.
Remember that spray tanning results will vary with different individuals and circumstances and very pale skins can be hard to tan. Someone with very pale skin will not be the same colour after treatment as someone with sallow skin.
Hormones, pH level of the skin, stress, exhaustion or any herbal or prescribed medication may also affect your tan.
Sensitive/ Allergic skins:
There are no irritants in our products so they should be safe to use on sensitive skins, including skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
Hydration After Care
What you do before you come in and after you leave will make a huge difference on how much you love your results and if you can keep them up! It is preferable to use a MOISTURIZER that contains no oil, alcohol or excessive chemicals as this can affect the quality of your tan. Try Yorba Organics Baby Lotion or Earthsap Body Lotion.
Using products that contain HEAVY OILS before coming in (body washes, scrubs, lotions, and even shaving creams) will create a barrier between you and your tan. Ironically, some lotions designed to give you sunless color contain these tan stripping oils.
Tan Stripping Ingredients
Check products for these common tan stripping ingredients:
MINERAL OIL: It is a petroleum based skin softener that not only strips your tan but also clogs your pores – Avoid it like the plague. We have seen customer’s almost double their tan’s life by scrapping just this one ingredient!
PETROLATUM: Also a petroleum based skin softener that clogs the pores and strips the tan. It is prevalent in body butters mainly and really rich body cream washes. Again, avoid it not just for your tan, but for your skin. It’s a cheap ingredient that doesn’t lock in moisture, but just makes your skin feel soft. Hydrated skin and soft skin are not always the same thing.
SODIUM LAUREL SULFATE: Also known as SLS, this is the most common ingredient in body washes as it is a pretty strong detergent and lathers well. However, it will strip your tan quicker than anything. Look for products that contain the less harsh Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate or a more natural coconut derived sulfate.
